QUEZON CITY, May 22 (PIA) -- The Commission on Election (Comelec) on Monday wants to postpone the Barangay and Sangguanian Kabataan (SK) Elections scheduled this October so the poll body can have enough time to prepare.
The poll body may also need time to attend to election protests that may be filed after all proclamations had been done.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brilliantes wants the barangay elections move to October 2014 or January 2015.
"Kasi tapos na, nakapagpahinga na kami naayos na yung mga problema (election protests)...malayo pa ang preparasyon sa 2016 (By that time, we could have recovered, resolved the problems (election protests)...will have enough time for preparations in 2016)," Brilliantes said.
The barangay elections law (Republic Act No. 9164) stated that, "There shall be synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections which shall be held on July 15, 2002. Subsequent synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections shall be held on the last Monday of October and every three (3) years thereafter."
He said he would endorse bills that will introduce postponement for both elections.
As for the proclamation of winning party-lists groups, Brilliantes said they would finish the canvassing within 10 days.
Partial proclamation may take place with this week.
The National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) suspended the canvassing last week for the party-lists to expedite the proclamation of winning senatorial candidates.
Earlier, the poll body proclaimed the following senatorial bets: Sonny Angara , Nancy Binay, Alan Peter Cayetano, Chiz Escudero, Loren Legarda, Grace Poe, Bam Aquino, Antonio Trillianes IV, Koko Pimentel, Cynthia Villar, JV Ejercito and Gringo Honasan.
Senators-Elect Binay and Trillianes both missed their first proclamations.
Binay did not appear Thursday night in a demonstration of solidarity with UNA's motion to defer the proclamations of the first batch of new and re-elected senators.
Trillianes received his certificate Monday in a simple ceremony in the Comelec Headquarters.
He was on a trip with his family during when Comelec first proclaimed his election. (Lyndon Plantilla/Media ng Bayan)
